The last UEFI versions (3010 and 2105) do not even have an option rom for the Asmedia controller, so don't bother unless you want to use an older UEFI version. In any case, don't expect any improvements in the Asmedia controller speed, it is slow as Necrosan said and won't get any faster with a firmware update.
The SATA ports on my HP Presario P6214Y motherboard failed. The BIOS would not recognize any of my SATA disks. (it would sometimes for 1-2 minutes after power up) I reset the BIOS to default. I installed an Asmedia Asm106x PCIe controller card and connected my hard drive The system will now partially boot. The computer attempted an automatic system repair, but system repair was unsuccessful and did not help. I was able to boot a system recovery CD.
I attempted to load the Asmedia drivers but the driver load failed. I can boot into F8 but safe mode and safe mode with command prompt would not work.
I was able to get into 'Repair Your Computer' Command prompt. I attempted to load the drivers with RUNDLL32.EXE SETUPAPI.DLL,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 128. Asahci64.inf I got no indication at all. No errors, no success messages either. Still same result.
Complete boot fails but will boot enough to attempt system repair and F8 works but safe mode won't work. I'm pretty sure the hard drive is good.
I was able to copy off the data to another computer with a SATA to USB device Any other suggestions on getting it to boot? Any suggestions on a different SATA card? I think the problem is either with the card or the motherboard. The card would be the obvious choice but since the motherboard has already started to degrade with the onboard sata ports, the problem could very well be an extension of that failure. I assume this isn't under warranty anymore since you didn't get the motherboard replaced. This will be up to you what you want to try.
If you can find a cheap card to try out, that would certainly be the cheaper alternative but at the same time, you wouldn't need the card if you get a different motherboard. There are a lot more considerations for a motherboard though to make sure it's compatible with your components and you would probably need to reinstall Windows to get it working after installing the replacement. Hopefully that was helpful in some fashion. If you can't fix it with duct tape, you haven't used enough.
Thank you for the suggestions. I'm almost certain he SATA ports on the motherboard have failed. BIOS does not detect the drives attached to it. The SATA card is new. The SATA card detects the drives attached to it.
The CD will boot if I press the esc at power up and select the option to boot from the optical drive. Strangely enough it BIOS does not see the optical drive at all but it does see the hard drive in the boot sequence (attached to the SATA card). I did see another post that the problem could be a firmware problem on the new SATA card. I will be attempting a firmware update next, then I will try to load the drivers again.
The computer is no longer under warranty. I managed to get into the repair mode cmd prompt and successfully update the drivers and SATA card firmware, the machine still will not boot. It tries to boot but fails during the boot-up process. I can get into the F8 menu but the system will not boot into safe mode cmd prompt or gui safe mode. I bought a new disk, and tried several things: Fresh install Windows 8 - system boots Fresh install Windows 7 - system boots Restored system from complete image backup - system will NOT boot Restored back to factory image - system WILL boot So now I am copying all my data files from the original disk to the new disk. To paraphrase Carl Sagan ' billions and billions' of bytes.
Next I will need to customize my system settings and re-install all my software.
